Our Technology

Background

In 2020, we acquired an exclusive agriculture license for a mathematical framework patented by PrecisionLife, a human health company using the framework to gain an understanding of disease phenotypes that was deeper and more detailed than anything previously achieved.
We acquired the license because we saw an opportunity to use the framework to build a powerful engine capable of mining unique and valuable insights from food and agriculture datasets. We then set about building our proprietary Synomics Insights Platform, based on the following principles:

Our platform must be computationally faster than classic machine learning and bioinformatics.
Our platform must be easily deployable in a physical or virtual environment.
We must be able to accommodate a full range of phenotypic, multi-omic and environmental data and explore high order data sets.
Our insights should be based on the discovery of feature-combinations that have explanatory power above that described by current state-of-the-art technology.
Our platform must either directly translate these insights into action, or provide our customers with a clear path to do so.

Synomics Insights Platform

We believe it is crucial to make our ability to discover deep, combinatorial insights accessible to all parts of the food and agriculture industry.

We have therefore built our platform to provide simple, end-to-end analytics capabilities, from data ingestion and quality control through to analysis, output interpretation and translation to utility. Our integrated platform allows customers of any size or sophistication to generate value from their datasets.

Onboarding

To prepare data for ingestion into our Insights Platform, we have standard APIs that can interface with most common data types. If no API exists, we can work with you to structure your data for ingestion, from database setup to intermediate translation steps. Our standardized data QC ensures all analyses run through our platform use the optimal balance of data quality and quantity.

Processing

At the core of our platform, our patented mathematical framework combines with cutting-edge machine learning and powerful statistical validation to analyze input datasets (e.g. SNP data) and mine the combinations that best explain the outcome in question (trait, disease, etc.). Our unique approach makes our platform extremely computationally efficient, enabling us to analyze large, multi-dimensional datasets rapidly and at a level of accuracy not previously seen on this scale.

Post-processing

Once statistically significant target combinations have been identified, we apply our automated natural-language-programming annotator to these findings (e.g. detailed SNP, gene and pathway annotation) to determine biological relevance for the phenotypes or diseases. This enables further validation of our findings and highlights key targets for further investigation (e.g. assay development, resequencing, novel genomic evaluations, novel treatment targets, gene editing targets, microbiome targets etc.)

Translation

We have developed a next-generation genetic evaluation method into our Synomics Advance product suite, incorporating the novel, combinatorial features and statistically- and biologically-relevant insights generated from our platform. This model builds on the robust properties of a standard GBLUP, ssBLUP or modified version of these common methods, to further enhance and accelerate accurate genomic selection and genetic gain.
